Topic: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

Might be age, but I occasionally dig out old Mix Comps that used to be on heavy rotation and slap them in with great anticipation...

Only to find that nowadays they sound like 4k bpm nosebleed shite and get lobbed straight in the bin.

Every now and then though, a real cracker resurfaces that still sounds good today.

This week, I am mostly giving two thumbs up to....

Digweed's Transitions Vol 2.

Pwopah Monsta cool

Feel free to leave similar observations, should you have them. Or don't, it's your call.

Pig & Dan's Submission Sessions gets it regularly too.
Pako & Frederik's Atlantic Breakers too, but that's not a mix comp I suppose

Re: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

I can often be found taking a pleasant stroll down Nostalgia Lane.  Got load of old comps on the iPhone that I revert back to for a listen regularly.

All the good GU releases (NY, Hong Kong, San Fran, London, Athens, Ibiza)
All of Danny Howells' releases (Nocturnal Frequencies 12&3, Rennaissence, 24:7)
Communicate
A couple of the nu breeds (Howells, Burridge)
Northern exposures
MMII
Bedrock
Bedrock II
Fabric (Richards, Francis, Lawson, Wiggle)

Etc.

Re: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

I don't generally listen to mix comps from the past. I do however regularly listen to mixes from back in the day. Mainly in the heyday of 92-96.

So I can reminisce on how good it all was compared to today.

Part of the problem

Re: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

H-Foundation's Fabric never disappoints. Been listening to the wiggle fabric too, brilliant mix. The Tyrant fabrics too, all of them are genius, including the quirky one that Craig Richards did. Could bust out that Renaissance Revelations mix from Danny Howells - seems evergreen. On the other hand, that Nick Warren disc in the same package could probably get a mention in that Shit Comps thread.

Completely agree on MMII, beautiful. I find myself going back to Hong Kong quite a bit.

Communicate is one of my all time fav's.

Was a complete Eureka moment when I heard this. School mates thought I was barmy. Absolute power

Re: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

Look up a Facebook page called ‘the classic mix cd series’ or such like – links up to his soundcloud page with shitloads of old mix cds hes uploaded. Prog snobs wont like it but for the rest of us its an absolute goldmine

When I play......no dog barks!!!!

Re: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

I like to occasionally blast out Sasha Ibiza, even if disc 2 sounds like its on the wrong speed, also have NE 2 disc one on my phone but not disc 2

Re: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

Weird you say that coz the other week I got it out and thought exactly the same. At the time I heard nothing wrong with it though. Hhmmmmm

Part of the problem

Re: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

Wrong speed? as in slow/low bpm / fast/high? don't get that.  Listening to it now and it sounds fine to me.

As in it sounds rather fast compared to the stuff I listen to these days, I don't mean it's literally on the wrong speed, although cd2 of Digweeds Sydney GU does sound like its playing on 45 when it should be on 33

Re: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

Ibiza sounds far too fast.

Part of the problem

Re: Re-discovering old Mix Comps

kind of agree with the some of the tracks sounding too fast these days..

i'e liked  these tunes( just a sample selection) when they come out but now, it sounds all pinky and perky +6 pitch to me now

Yeah, and I actually remember thinking Disc 1 was very subtle/downtempo when it came out. LOL.

Rumbling basslines and POWER breakdowns and girly vocals everywhere really.
