Topic: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

Just bought a copy of Global Underground Prototype 4 (the last one in the series) for 2 quid.

Really enjoying it. CD one is about as close as prog can get to trance without being trance. Got as far as track 3 CD 2. More what I expected from Seb on this one.

Anyone got this? Thoughts?

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

I remember back in the day how peeps on the GU board would bash his Prototype mixes, and to be fair they were a far cry from the GU flagship mixes, but now, I dig them more than I used too...I can't really remember which one is better than the others, but there are some real gems on some of those mixes, and taken as a whole they reflect proper prog at the time, but nothing groundbreaking, just solid mixes.  I've seen him a few times live and it was pretty meh tbf, but a nice guy.

What made them give Seb his own series?

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

I remember discussing this series on GU.....and i do think it got a bashing. That, or no one really cared to discus it. Whatever the case you can't go wrong with #4. Its the best of them all.

That junkie mix is a great piece of music. Think Ill have to get that one back in my iTunes.

I liked these....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN44OtWeFW4

That Durango 95 track was awesome too.

Wish I was old and a little sentimental.

Hell yeah!!!

Years later we realise how we miss this kind of stuff.

Wish Seb was still playing this style.

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN44OtWeFW4  that reminds me of West on 27th

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7z7X_tfX6E and that reminds me of Medway - My Release

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

Rockrose is a fucking great track

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

Prototype 2 was absolutely excellent, warm up soundtrack to some of my best clubbing years.

Besides, Drum Decay, big system, couple of decent bangers, will make you feel absolutely invincible.

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

Enjoyed all the Prototype CDs back in the day.

Not really sure what happened to Seb Fontaine - I saw him name-checked on Twitter the other day playing at Boujis which is the type of wanky Mayfair club where Prince Harry hangs out.

What made them give Seb his own series?

Seb was actually pretty popular and very well known back then...Residencies all over the place & born on Ibiza...or his parents met there...I read somewhere...Oakenfold promoted him quite a bit as well...so exposure plus the sound he was pushing prob led to him getting his own series.

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

Him and Yousef had just taken over as Cream residents from Oakenfold and Warren IIRC.

Big hype at the time surrounding him.

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

He also had a show on Radio One for a while and was running his own night (Type) at the Cross in London too.  How times have changed.

I also seem to remember hearing him referred to as 'Dead Mundane' and he was responsible for the most mind-bendingly tedious set I have ever heard at Turnmills a few years back.

On his day though I thought he could be decent.

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

he also ran the ever popular Malibu Stacey night with Craig Richards at the Hannover Grand.

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

Some of the Type nights at The Cross were brilliant.

Saw Pete Tong and Futureshock there for the opening night and it was boss.

Deltoid enhancing prog from the get go.

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

Always thought his Type night at The Cross was a poor mans Renaissance full of chavs. Sorry, Ed.

Seb Fontaine was wank. And probably still is.

I sort of agree with that, wasn't the best night

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

He played some decent house and prog between 01-04 on his show.  Ironically R1 went seriously down hill after he left.

My thoughts exactly. Thought No. 3 was pretty good as well.

I seem to remember one New Year's Eve flipping a coin between Renaissance at Canvas and Type at The Cross and choosing Renaissance only for it to be absolutely diabolical.  We left at 4AM in disgust and walked wistfully past The Cross which sounded cracking.

Re: Seb Fontaine GU Prototype

I dont ever recall Renaissance ever holding a NYE party at Canvas? What year?

...was dragged along to Subterrania years ago to see this great new DJ that had this massive West London following, strangest music ever, pumping house which would just get going when he would suddenly, not-so-seamlessly, 'blend' into an R&B track for the ladeeeez

I got the impression he was searching for a style then, and still is now..

Those must have the days when Davina McCall was his manager.
