Topic: Greatest club side ever?

For me, growing up, remember being mesmerised by that Milan side of the late 80s, early 90s.

Gullit, van Basten and Rijkaard in the same side.

They had a couple of handy local players as well - Baresi and Maldini weren't bad.

Utterly unstoppable from what I remember.

Invincibles would have wiped their arse with them, or anybody else for that matter.

Well, it's possible they would, because of superior training methods and standards of fitness developing (although if you watch that Milan side they were incredibly fit, playing a high pressing game chasing down possession whenever they lost it). But then, what's the point of comparing teams and players of different generations? Cristiano Ronaldo would wipe the put up against Di Stefano because he isn't wearing fucking lead boots. But he isn't as head and shoulders above his peers as Di Stefano was.

However, if the 'Invincibles' were so fucking good how come they never fucking won the pinnacle of club competition?

Aldo would still have only just been behind MVB on the goal front .... Thierry a distant 3rd.

Re: Greatest club side ever?

That Milan side was restricted to three foreigners but even if they weren't they still wouldn't get near the 2008 to 2011 Barcelona side.

Lol at that Arsenal side being mentioned in this thread - they drew 12 games that season.

Much better defence than the Barcelona side, Baresi and Maldini are two of the greatest defenders who ever lived and Costacurta and Tassotti weren't half bad either.

Better than playing Mascherano as a centre half.

That Barcelona side didn't concede many goals. Possession is the best form of defence, blah, blah, blah.

That Milan side didn't concede any goals. EVER.

Costacurta under-estimated as a player .. fell foul of the worst Jürgen dive ever .. cunt-stakes on a par with dear ol' derms there.

Talking of cunt steaks (sic) - simon are you going to persist with that avatar after rat face has left the sinking ship?

Re: Greatest club side ever?

Costacurta, Baresi, Maldini, Tassotti - 274 caps between them. Ridiculous.

Re: Greatest club side ever?

Peter Shilton and Thomas Ravelli combined have got more caps than that - so what's your point caller?

274 caps between them in a difficult national team to get into... with competition from some ridiculously good players (eg Giuseppe Bergomi, Antonio Benarrivo, and Pablo Cannavaro and Alessandro Nesta (in Costacurta's case, who was still regularly winning caps until 1998).

Yes. Liverpool romping the league or FA Cup in alternate years.

To be fair, probably one of the best midfields ever put out by a club side.

This is what Flaresy needs to cop on to.

You need the crowning glory of big cup.

In which case the mighty Forest side of 78-80 should be right up there. Clough took that team out of nowhere to win the League during Liverpool's dominant phase and back to back European Cups inside two years. He turned John Robertson from a fat, useless cunt into one of Europe's most feared wingers and Peter Shilton into the world's best goalkeeper. Forest were a nothing provincial club, not a massive money making machine like United were in '99, so Clough's triumph is far superior to Ferguson.

Would anyone in their right mind deny that Clough was, until alcoholism and lack of man management skills finally overtook him, some kind of genius?

The best manager England never had, pity he couldnt get any success at Leeds but he probably went there at the wrong time

Lack of man management skills? Very harsh.

He punched Roy Keane in the face, told Fashanu not to be gay and then kissed a QPR fan.

Don't believe he would have made a good England manager myself.

His strength was bending players to his will to create a team, not managing massive egos for a few weeks a year.
