Re: FAO Wally

I could understand using the things with render farms and the like sure.

I guess if the things were cracked and a flavour of Linux could be installed then it might be doable. I don't know much about the systems either but, even though they are as close to typical PC x86/x64 hardware as they have ever been, neither MS or Sony are going to make it easy to put your own operating system on them.

So I doubt you'll be able to stick Windows/MacOS X on them any time soon.

Re: FAO Wally

If you could split them open and they where any good, it would make for a cheap render farm by comparison. The 8 core Macs are around the £2000 mark iirc.

Re: FAO Wally

They use the Xeon processors, don't they?

Even the bottom of the range 8 core chip is £660 retail on it's own. Motherboards anywhere from £170+. But I reckon you could build a rig based on that with an extremely healthy amount of RAM for much less then the 2K Apple will charge you. £1200 easily. That said Xeon allows for multisocket motherboards to be used and getting 2 quad-core Xeons, rather than single 8 core, seems cheaper still. (that may be offset by the price of a dual socket mobo though).

But yeah, still a lot more expensive then either PS4 or XBox One. But they always sell the consoles at a loss and recover the money from the games.

Both systems are also based on AMD APUs, I think? Not seen any benchmarks yet but AMD are not usually as strong as comparable Intel CPUs. It may be that something like a 6 core Intel i7 could still give better grunt.

Feck mine that was geeky for a Thursday night. hmm

Re: FAO Wally

PS4 is cheaper and you don't have to plug it into the internet all the fucking time......clear win

Yup. Ironically I'm far less tuned in to this sort of thing than I used to be.

Re: FAO Wally

Really looking forward to GTA5 this week, all of the trailers look brilliant and I've been a fan of the series since Vice City. Rockstar are just so good at making games - the GTA's, Red Dead and Max Payne all got multiple gaming use from me.

The only drawback from the GTA4 game was the radio stations, which were a bit too 'gangsta' for me (and the Francois K station wasnt the best either). Hope there is an improvement on GTA5

Re: FAO Wally

I'm gonna buy a new console to play GTA 5.  Should i get an xbox or a ps3?  from what i gather the game is pretty much the same on both but one of them must have an edge?

Xbox. It's got a far better controller and the online side of things is really slick.

Reviews of multiplatform releases always use the Xbox - must be a reason for that.

Wally, does the MP go beyond deathmatch and tedious wave-based co-op?

I'd go for an XBox at this stage. The old models were horribly noisy and sounded like a hairdryer next to your TV. The latest revisions are a lot quieter.

Although I think you have to pay for online, whereas PS3 is free. I don't play enough online games to justify that cost.

There is also the fact the PS3 is an excellent Blu Ray player, if you don't have one.

Re: FAO Wally

Just fyi - the difference between XBox and PS3 versions is absolutely negligible. I'd go for Xbox purely because XBL is so much better than PSN if you intend to play MP.

You better fucking believe it does:

It's everything the single player game is with another 15 players in the same city.

We're very proud of it.

And that's just Wally on the pull.

Sex p(r)esto, I got your message - will sort it out shortly - bit tied up at the moment as you can imagine. :-)

Good man.

Re: FAO Wally

I've pre-ordered it.

Re: FAO Wally

This game does indeed look the nuts from the adverts - despite the Sexy Beast storyline rip-off.

It's a difference between nice trees or nice floors and texture bandwidths as far as I can muster so far
